"Where I’m From" write-alike by Gabriel

If I said I was from Cedar Park, where there are chances aplenty and friends all around, do you think people then might know where I’m from?

Where I’m from, weekends are spent outside, with the only time spent inside is when the parents are asleep blissfully, and the children awake restlessly. Where the children play their games, making rules and breaking rules as if they were cutting paper. To them, life is a game, and the only time out of it is when we must learn to play the game that the adults ask us to play.

Where I come from, neighbors are open. We all help one another out without ever expecting anything in return. Neighbor feeds neighbor, even if it wasn’t the intention, because a lunch with friends is fun on occasion. Neighbor helps neighbor, because no one wants to be alone on stage, performing a dance that they spent months practicing. Where I come from, community is being there, in the moment, old and young, living life to the fullest.

Where I’m from, no one minds if the older children come to play. They involve them just like they would another young one. Where I’m from, being a monitor doesn’t have to be a boring task where you only watch and moderate, it can be a joy. When the kids play with you, and look up to you as an older brother, it takes on a different meaning. It no longer is a task of growing up, it is a joy of growing up. The burden goes away, and in its wake, leaves a gift of wisdom, and fond memories.

Where I come from, there are no bad days, only learning experiences. Where I come from, everyone is helping, and your triumphs are everyone’s triumphs. Where I come from, neighbors are like family.
