"Where I’m From" Write-alike poem by Sarah

I am from big black garbage bags

full of other people’s castoff clothes.

I am from dirty feet and dandelion clocks

scattering wishes across the grass.

I’m from long winters of silent snow and blowing winds and icicle’d hair

from sleeping in my clothes for the next day so I wouldn’t have to change

in the cold of Michigan mornings.

I’m from sisters

From Rebekah, Rachel, Abigail, Hannah, Elizabeth and Martha

I’m from “oh gad” and “you hahgs,” from “piss or get off the pot!”

I’m from breakfast for dinner and peanut butter toast

from Glen Lake and Bass Lake and Lake Michigan

from weak eyes and sharp brains

from my mother’s wide dimples and my father’s dark eyes.

I am from 1042 W. Harbor Hwy

Still

Even though it’s been fifteen years and more since I lived here

This is

never was

always will be

home.
